College Admissions Tests
SAT
The SAT Reasoning Test is the most important test you will take in high school and is used in college admissions. The SAT is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors. Each section of the SAT is scored on a scale of 200-800, with two writing subscores for multiple-choice and the essay. It is administered seven times a year in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and U.S. Territories, and six times a year overseas.

SAT II / SAT Subject Tests
SAT Subject tests are given in specific subject tests in English, history, mathematics, science, and language. Many colleges use the Subject Tests for admission and require you take one or more of them to apply to a specific program.
In some cases, colleges will allow you to place out of college courses with a sufficient score on the Subject Test. The best time to take an SAT Subject Test is right after you have finished a year-long class in that subject.

PSAT
The PSAT stands for Preliminary SAT. It is a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT Reasoning Test. You may also hear it referred to as the NMSQT which stands for the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. This is because a good score on the PSAT gives you a chance to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs. (links to www.nationalmerit.org)
High schools administer the PSAT for sophomores and juniors. However, only the junior year PSAT counts toward NMSC scholarships.
