Katy Testmasters Student Achieves Perfect Score
Long-time Test Masters Student Captures 2400 on January SAT
HOUSTON, TX -- Knowing the name of Jupiter’s third moon or Earth’s most abundant element probably didn’t contribute to Jack Xu’s perfect 2400 on the January 2010 SAT, but his love of acquiring knowledge certainly didn’t hurt either. The Seven Lakes High School trivia enthusiast earned his perfect SAT score after completing a Test Masters SAT preparation course, becoming the latest in a long line of Test Masters students to reach perfection on the world’s most well-established reasoning test.
"I highly doubt I could have obtained a perfect score without taking the Test Masters class," says Xu, who was born in China. "The classes immensely boosted my scores on the Critical Reading and Writing sections of the PSAT (I took the course in the summer before my junior year) and the SAT as well."
When asked if he had any advice for other students who are planning to take the SAT, Xu recommended focusing on vocabulary and getting in plenty of practice. "The best advice I can give you is to memorize your vocabulary and take as many practice tests as you possibly can," he suggests. "As I kept completing practice tests, my scores on critical reading, writing, and math all increased (especially critical reading passages)."
"[Testmasters’] Exam Club was a great way to practice," says Xu. "It is true that practice makes perfect!"
Looking Toward the Future
Xu’s family moved to Texas from China, settling in Houston after living briefly in Midland and Plano. Xu currently attends Seven Lakes High School in Katy, where 60% of last year’s National Merit Scholars were Test Masters students. An avid cellist, one of his personal goals is to one day play the cello with a professional orchestra or perform as a solo artist. He also has a love of trivia and knowledge, as evidenced by his consistent participation in quiz bowl tournaments. Having grown up in China, immersed in Asian culture, Xu desires to one day “[travel] across Europe to learn more about [European] culture.” Although he is not completely sure what kind of career he wants, he has tentative plans to attend Rice University and major along a pre-medicine track.
“I really don’t have any concrete dreams about my future and haven’t chosen a specific major or area of interest yet. I am leaning towards the medical field but am not positive yet if that’s what I want to do,” he says.
In addition to being an active student both inside and outside of school, Xu finds time to participate in community activities as well, volunteering at a retirement home near his house called Sunrise and occasionally helping out with YMCA summer camp programs.
For his successful efforts on the SAT, Test Masters will award him with a $1000 scholarship.
