TestMasters ISEE Lower Level Classroom Course

For most fourth and fifth graders the ISEE is the first timed, standardized exam they have ever sat. Half the work of this course is academic; the other half is teaching a nine- or ten-year-old that a clock on the wall is not an emergency. Seven three-hour teaching sessions and three full-length practice exams, taught by an instructor who teaches this exam and nothing else.

What a session looks like

Each meeting takes one question type at a time: the strategy goes on the board, the class works examples together, then the same questions come back on a timer so the method gets used under pressure instead of merely understood. Children this age learn pacing by living it, not by being told about it.

The three practice exams are given in class under real conditions, machine-scored, and returned broken out by question type. That lets us separate the child who does not know fractions from the child who knows fractions and ran out of time, because those two need entirely different help.

What the course covers

  • Verbal Reasoning. Synonyms and sentence completion, approached as elimination first and vocabulary second, so an unknown word stops being a dead end.
  • Reading Comprehension. Working five passages steadily, including the one about a topic the child has never heard of.
  • Quantitative Reasoning. Estimating and comparing rather than computing, which is where the time is saved.
  • Mathematics Achievement. Fractions, ratios, percentages, area and perimeter, drilled until they are automatic.
  • The essay. A simple plan a ten-year-old can carry out calmly in thirty minutes, since every school on your list reads it.

Materials

The Test Masters ISEE Lower Level manual is handed out at the second class and everything is taught from it. It stays with your family afterwards for the practice that continues up to test day.
